The Southern African Forum for Independent Animators (SAFIA) originated as a facebook group in 2015 with the aim to create a Southern African independent animator community. In 2023 a non-profit company was established to serve as a more official structure within which to create projects and to attract regional supporters and participants. SAFIA aims to secure funding for projects, from the production of independent short films, to the establishing of a regional festival for independent animated films.
