
katty vandenberghe was originally born in Gent, Belgium, and grew up in Pretoria, South Africa since the age of three. Starting out with a natural sciences degree, she transitioned across to graphic design, visual arts, publishing, and education in creative digital media. As a digital media pioneer she became proficient in a wide range of digital crafts, but these days she prefers to support affordable and accessible hand-crafted media.
katty has worked on animation and video art projects in the design, visual arts, performance arts, and independent animation industry since 2000 across a wide range of media and creative practices.
As a self-employed media creative and activist, katty vandenberghe has acquired a wide range of skills that contribute considerably to projects consisting of small teams and limited budgets. For all these reasons katty is a supporting team member of the Southern African Forum for Independent Animators.
Notable animation projects that katty has been part of include ‘The First Kiss’ with creative collaborators Anni Snyman (visual artist) and Eugenie Grobler (musician), and ‘Yellow Daisy Butterfly’ with Bianca Juliette O’Neal (author and film maker) and Diek Grobler (director). In the performance arts arena katty has worked with Mamela Nyamza (director) on the performance art film ‘Pest Control’ for the online National Arts Festival during the 2020 pandemic. As an activist katty has collaborated with Claire Rousell on graphic harvesting videos in environmental and animal rights campaigns as part of their EarthDrawn Media Productions project.
katty vandenberghe has been involved in media activism since the early 1990s in the LGBTQI+ and gender-based violence arena. These days she prefers to focus her attention on the natural world.
